The Robocall Scandal

February 29, 2012

This morning, I heard Troy Media’s Catherine Ford on the CBC on a panel with the Globe and Mail’s John Ibbitson regarding the Robocall Scandal; both shared the position that Stephen Harper not only controls the Conservative Party message, but he also controls the civil service.

As people who most likely play fair, Ford and Ibbitson probably don’t expect to be duped by cheaters, and therefore readily give Prime Minister Harper the benefit of the doubt. “He couldn’t have known.” I think it is all too-likely that Mr Harper knew what was going on, campaign expenses have to be paid and Harper signs off on everything. Mr Harper clearly doesn’t like to be caught flat-footed and any staff member that would put the Prime Minister in such a position would rue the day. If one believes Harper to be the controlling type of person Ford and Ibbitson credit him with, it is more rational than not, that Harper approved this scheme.

Even if it is improvable that Mr Harper engaged in election fraud, its time for the media and Ms. Ford to cease with the Pollyannisms and get real. Unless we want a further erosion of electoral and democratic practices, we need to insist on a Judicial Inquiry into Elections Canada and the messes made in the last election, including the Robocall issue and the decision of the RCMP not to investigate to charges of fraud, and we need it now.
