I concur with most of Terry's assessment with a few exceptions. I would be curious as to the viability of said papers in a stand alone format. I'd love to see a local ownership with a vested interest to work with the other papers, to really share the diverseness of Canada AND the challenges our world faces in a frank, candid manner. However with a strongly worded "Code of Ethics". Something like this would be a good starting point. 1. Adhere to the journalistic values of honesty, courage, fairness, balance, independence, credibility and diversity, giving no priority to commercial or political considerations over professional ones. ( This # 1 of 10 from the Al Jazeera Network "Code of Ethics") If not, just state that your newspaper are purveyors of advertising or promoting corporate interests regardless if it is detrimental to your community at large. But be up front about it. Australia's Ten Network " non sale" is what really crippled Canwest. Terrible decision. Hard to fathom considering that it was a LCD ( Lowest Common Denominator) asset. As per " Advice For New Owners"...well that hits the nail on the head 100%!! It would be a dream to see "Critical Thinking" in the newspapers. Or TV.... Real critical thinking, not dare I say beholden bull-ship that has been so prevalent here in Calgary media for the last decade. I am passionate about the state of our society, and the role a "Good" newspaper could provide in Calgary. All of mankind needs to stop the spin and discuss where it is exactly that we, as a community or culture are going to, now!
